Following heavy rainfall on 22 February 2026 at approximately 16:00 in the Rwenzori Mountains, the Taliha River overflowed its banks.⁠

Floodwaters carrying rocks and mud inundated the Northern Sector Headquarters in Mutsora, causing significant material damage and affecting households in the surrounding area.⁠

It is with deep sadness that we confirm the loss of our colleague, Ms. Natembo Kizungu Noëlla, who died during this event.⁠

Noëlla was a valued member of the Virunga team. We extend our sincere condolences to her family and loved ones, and to our colleagues and members of the local community impacted by the flooding.⁠

Staff have been safely relocated. Technical and administrative teams are assessing the damage and taking the necessary steps to secure and restore the site.⁠
⁠
Electricity to parts of Mutsora has now been restored through the work of our technical teams.⁠
